On Monday, 5 November 2012, Richard Gray Cottrell passed away unexpectedly. Mr Cottrell was the former Chairman of Strate’s Regulatory and Supervisory Committee and an Independent Non-Executive Director of Strate.

Mr Cottrell will be remembered for his invaluable contribution to the South African financial markets. According to Beverley Furman, the Head of STRATE Supervision, the creation of STRATE Supervision back in 2001 can be attributed to the leadership and dedication of Mr Cottrell. “His constant willingness to share knowledge and experience in the supervision and regulation of financial markets has been instrumental to Strate and our industry.”

Mr Cottrell completed his tertiary education at Stanford University and qualified as a Financial Chartered Accountant. He became a Chartered Accountant of South Africa in 1957. From 1984 to 1995, he served as a Managing Partner of Coopers and Lybrand South Africa, a predecessor of PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc. and served as the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. After retiring from practice, he became Executive Officer of the Financial Services Board in 1996.

Mr Cottrell served on numerous boards as an Independent Non-Executive Director including Glenrand MIB Ltd, Nedcor Bank Limited, Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa Limited and Strate.

On behalf of Strate, we would like to extend our condolences to Mr Cottrell’s family and friends.
